Advice for ACP Course Selection

When you are making your selection of ACP courses, please be sure to first consult the ACP Course List and ACP Course Descriptions for information about:

ACP suggests that in your course selection decision process you consult with your High School counselors and teachers to maybe help interpret and explain some of the information contained within these documents. This will help to make more informed and educated course selection decisions to best benefit you with your intended college major.

To qualify for an exemption from basic composition at IU Bloomington students must have scored 670 or better on the SAT or 22 or better on the ACT. For more details, visit the Exemption from English W131 page.

If you intend on attending a college or university other than IU, please refer to the page regarding information on the Transfer of ACP Credit. In addition to this document please also consult with your school counselor.

The additional preparation and difficulty of a college course requires that you and your counselor plan carefully to ensure that you will be successful in learning the course material. Your counselors and teachers are reminded that regularly enrolled, full time IU students are considered to be carrying a full course load if they register for 12 to 17 hours in a semester (3 or 4 courses). Many high school students applying for ACP coursework are heavily involved in extracurricular activities, hold part-time jobs, fulfill responsibilities in church and community organizations, and take from 3 to 4 high school academic courses in addition to their ACP coursework. ACP certainly does not want to suggest that student’s not be involved in extracurricular activities, however, students should be advised as to the rigor of ACP courses and would recommend against taking more than 2 or 3 ACP courses in any one semester.

Once you have completed your ACP courses and have graduated High School, if you will be attending Indiana University and have received a GPA below 2.0 (C) in the ACP coursework the University Division will send a letter shortly after the start of your first full semester at IU warning you about your academic status. For that reason, it is imperative that you talk with your parents, school counselors, and teachers to determine if taking an ACP course for college credit would be conducive to a successful beginning to a college career whether at Indiana University or any other college or university. Similarly, if you do choose to take an ACP course for credit it is strongly advised, as it is with your other high school courses, that you do your best to avoid entering any university with a GPA below the minimum required 2.0.

In addition, college-level textbooks are required for ACP courses. The cost for purchasing or renting these texts do tend to cost more than the regular high school text.
